ANBARIC AND NATIONAL GRID AGREE TO NATIONAL GRID TAKEOVER OF VERMONT GREEN LINE PROJECT

Project Development Will Continue as Planned

WAKEFIELD/WALTHAM, MA – January 17, 2017 – National Grid, Anbaric, and Citizens Energy, the co-developers of the Vermont Green Line, today announced the conversion of National Grid’s and Citizen’s development loans to an equity investment in the Vermont Green Line Project.

National Grid will assume primary responsibility for developing the project and Citizens Energy will continue to be an investor and assist in development. The development agreement among the three parties was structured to enable conversion of ownership to National Grid and Citizens Energy after completion of the initial stages of development. This move reflects the investors’ confidence in the project’s success.

Vermont Green Line (VGL) is a proposed 400 megawatt, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) electric transmission project designed to unlock and deliver reliable and affordable renewable energy to New England.

In March 2015, National Grid joined Anbaric in developing VGL as a reflection of the companies’ shared vision to help transform New England’s energy landscape while driving a healthy regional economy and environment.

In August 2016, Citizens Energy announced it would invest in the Vermont Green Line and use profits from its share of the line to help working families with their energy needs in Vermont.

Citizens Energy partners with utilities and developers across the country to develop new high-voltage transmission lines. Under its model, Citizens Energy’s projects — now including the Vermont Green Line — increase grid reliability, unlock access to large quantities of renewable energy and fund charitable programs for people living in the area, all at no additional cost to energy customers.

The project has been approved by several of the communities where it would be located in Vermont and New York.  The developers have filed for project approval in New York and Vermont, and in December issued an open solicitation to purchase capacity on the line.

09.28.16: Beekmantown Signs Vermont Green Line License Agreement

BEEKMANTOWN — The Vermont Green Line project is one step closer to becoming a reality.  Last week, town officials voted 4-0 (with one absent) to sign the license agreement allowing pipes to be placed underneath town roads.

The 6.7 miles of underground cable in Beekmantown will act as a mode of transportation for clean, carbon-free renewable energy under Lake Champlain through Vermont to New England states.

Mike Relyea of Amanus, a consulting group working with partners National Grid and Anbaric on the project, said two more hurdles need to be crossed before construction can start: New England Clean Energy RFP greenlighting the $650 million project and the New York and Vermont public service commission permitting the application.

Right now, over 20 bids, including Vermont Green Line, are being evaluated to see which contracts come out on top.

Results, Reylea said, are to be announced sometime this month.

“We’re pretty optimistic,” he said, referring to landing the contract.

08.03.16: Anbaric: Renewable Electricity Transmission Using High-Voltage Direct Current Technology

In an era of producing multiple forms of renewable electricity, the transmission of this high-voltage energy is becoming increasingly important.

Anbaric often uses high-voltage direct current (HVDC) technology, heralded as one of the “advanced transmission technologies” in the 2005 Energy Policy Act, which provided for the development of a stronger energy infrastructure.

HVDC systems have been in use commercially worldwide since 1954, when the island of Gotland was connected to mainland Sweden via a 60-mile cable. Since then, more than 25 systems have been installed globally. Most often they are used in marine applications where the distance for AC installation is too great. Other times they are used in parallel with AC systems where they provide additional operating control for the system operator.

HVDC systems provide many advantages for installation and construction and can contribute greatly to reliable and flexible operation of an electrical grid. These include:

  • Higher efficiency in moving large amounts of power over long distances
  • Very high reliability with 98.5% availability
  • Full controllability when needed to react quickly to changes in AC frequency
  • System oscillations can be controlled independent of AC system variations or in response to AC system conditions
  • Improving the stability of AC systems, including increasing the stability of parallel AC lines
  • Overload capabilities and controllability that can be beneficial to overall system operations and reliability
  • Ability to provide reactive power control and support of AC voltage, frequency control, limitation of short-circuit current, and transmission at reduced voltage
  • Greatly reduced vulnerability to adverse weather conditions — such as hurricanes, tornadoes, or ice storms — for submarine and buried cable

Waltham Selectboard Supports ‘Green Line’ Transmission Project

The Waltham, VT selectboard Tuesday night unanimously approved a resolution supporting the Vermont Green Line and allowing the project to be located along a specified route on Route 7 within the town. Project developers Anbaric Transmission and National Grid have proposed to construct the 60-mile cable project, which would bring 400 megawatts of onshore wind and hydropower from northern New York and Canada to New England. The project will originate in Beekmantown, New York; cross under Lake Champlain, and terminate in New Haven, VT. Both the land and lake portions of the project will be completely buried.

A proposed project to bring 400 megawatts of renewable energy to New England was explained to residents of the region where the power would be obtained last night.  The Vermont Green Line is the latest energy project that plans to run an electric transmission cable along the floor of Lake Champlain to bring renewable energy from northern New York and Canada to New England markets.

The high-voltage direct current line would begin at a converter station in Beekmantown near an existing wind farm. Six miles of underground cable would be run across the town to Lake Champlain.  The power cables would then be placed on the bottom of the lake for 40 miles.  The cables would come out of the lake in Vermont and again be placed underground for 13 miles to reach a converter station in New Haven where the power would be distributed to the New England power grid…(Read More)

Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut have dozens of proposals to consider as they look for enough additional electricity for tens of thousands of homes to meet their clean energy goals.

All told, 51 proposals need to be vetted in coming months as the three states look to sign long-term contracts for electricity from wind turbines, dams and solar projects, said Matthew Beaton, secretary of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
